Rep. Kirkpatrick Leads AZ Colleagues in Bipartisan Letter to Air Force Secretary Urging Support & Transparency for A-10 Program

Kirkpatrick Participates in Defense Approps Hearing Inquiring Status from Air Force Chief of Staff

(Tucson, AZ) — Today, Rep. Kirkpatrick sent a letter to Acting Secretary of the Air Force John Roth expressing continued support for the A-10 Warthog and requesting more transparency regarding the future of the aircraft. She is joined on the letter by Senator Kyrsten Sinema, Senator Mark Kelly, and Reps. Gallego, Schweikert, Biggs, O’Halleran, Lesko and Stanton.

“The Air Force has utilized divestment of the A-10 as a budgetary solution for modernization efforts. We will continue to advocate for the A-10 program because we have not seen a clearly articulated plan on how the Air Force will replace the aircraft’s capabilities nor plans to mitigate impacts to the communities surrounding installations where the A-10 is located,” the lawmakers wrote in their letter.

“Everyone knows the value of the A-10, both to Southern Arizona and to our national security as a whole,” said Rep. Kirkpatrick. “The A-10 is a crucial asset to the close air support mission and is an iconic symbol of the Arizona defense community—the fleet at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base remains the largest in the country. Protecting this aircraft is one of my top priorities in Congress, and I am proud to be joined by my colleagues to make this priority known. We will continue to advocate for the A-10 program as well as for increased transparency surrounding its future.”

“Protecting the A-10 is critical to our service members’ safety, our national security, and our military readiness, and I’ll continue working to ensure that Arizona’s military installations are well-resourced and well-equipped. Arizona servicemembers put their lives on the line to defend our country, and it is our duty to ensure they have proper support and resources,” said Senator Kyrsten Sinema.

“The A-10 is unmatched as a close air support aircraft and Arizona is proud to be home to this mission. I will continue calling for more transparency as we work to protect the A-10 because of its importance to our national security,” said Senator Mark Kelly.

In their letter, the lawmakers also ask the Acting Secretary for answers around the A-10 re-winging efforts, as well as a status update regarding the A-10 vs. F-35 comparison report directed by the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act.

This morning, Rep. Kirkpatrick also participated in a Defense Appropriations hearing where she asked General Charles Brown, Chief of Staff of the Air Force for a status update on the execution rate of the Fiscal Year 2021 funds and the re-wing program in general. View the hearing here.
