100% Clean Energy Economy by 2050
Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Kirkpatrick announced co-sponsorship of the 100% Clean Economy Act of 2019. This legislation sets a nationwide goal of achieving a 100 percent clean energy economy by 2050, defined as net-zero climate pollution across all sectors of America’s economy. The legislation directs federal agencies to use all existing authorities to put the United States on a path toward meeting the achievable 100 percent clean energy economy goal while remaining technology-neutral. Additionally, it directs the EPA to evaluate agency plans, make recommendations to strengthen them as needed, and report each year on progress toward a 100 percent clean energy economy. There are over 140 original co-sponsors and the bill is led by Representatives Donald McEachin (VA-04), Debbie Dingell (MI-12), Deb Haaland (NM-01), Earl Blumenauer (OR-3), Paul Tonko (NY-20) and Chellie Pingree (ME-01).
“Climate change is the greatest threat we face. Arizona has seen historic floods, longer wildfire seasons, and extreme weather put families at risk. Our state has a unique opportunity to be a leader in the growing clean energy economy with our virtually unlimited solar potential. Our combination of a dry climate and seemingly endless sunny days give us an opportunity to produce more solar power, which has become increasingly affordable here and nationwide. I am sponsoring this legislation because I know that Arizona can be part of the solution to the climate crisis. The 100% Clean Economy Act is ambitious and achievable. This is the climate action that we need to bolster our economy, protect the health of our kids, strengthen national security, and usher our country towards a 100% clean future,” said Rep. Kirkpatrick. “I am committed to bold climate action and I am proud to co-sponsor this important legislation helping our country transition to a 100% clean energy economy by 2050.”
“Hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts are gravely concerned about climate change impacts on our outdoor spaces, fish and wildlife habitats, and the outdoor recreation that drives Arizona’s economy,” said Glen Dickens, V.P., Arizona Wildlife Federation. “We need bold action in Washington, D.C. to tackle climate change. We applaud Rep. Kirkpatrick for her leadership and for her co-sponsorship of the 100% Clean Economy Act, a powerful tool in the arsenal which addresses climate change, put us on the path to a clean energy future and helps to ensure a prosperous future for our state for generations to come.”
The 100% Clean Economy Act of 2019 lays out principles for federal agency action, including, but not limited to:
- improving public health, especially for low-income and rural communities, communities of color, Tribal communities, and other vulnerable populations;
- enhancing job creation and ensuring an equitable transition for workers in industries and communities affected by changes in the economy;
- providing benefits for consumers, small businesses, and rural communities; and
- preparing communities for the impacts and risks of climate change.
